As a beverage, tea is at least 5000 years old having first discovered in Great China, and then popularised in Europe and its colonies in the 17th century.
A trade route was developed to ship tea from China to Lisbon by the Portuguese, and the Dutch ships later transported it to Holland and France.
The Great Britain were the last of the seafaring nations to break into the Chinese and East Indian trade routes.
The commercial tea planting of Ceylon took root as a result of a leaf disease in the coffee plants, and the fall of the industry.
In 1824, the first tea plant was brought to Ceylon by the British from China, and was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya.
In 1866, James Taylor, a Scottish who arrived in Ceylon, took over the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy, and opened the doors to tea cultivation in Sri Lanka.
The brand, ‘KingsBru’ tea, is a full bodied and wholesome beverage that carries with it the natural integrity of Ceylon tea,
widely acknowledged for its distinct flavour and quality.
These are marketed through John Keels, Bartleets, and Eastern Brokers based on extensive crop,

The founding father of KingsBru Teas (prerviously names as Ratnayaka Tea Factory) is the Late Mohundram A. A. W. Ratnayaka, born in 1880. He was a land proprietor who initially cultivated tea in his 800 acres of land. He was a philanthropist, and a well-respected dignitary in the Morawak Korale sub district of the southern part of Ceylon, and the ‘head’ of the village he lived in.
The Late Mohundram Ratnayaka laid the foundation stone for the Ratnyaka Tea Factory in 1919.
The second phase of the Ratnayake Factory’s development was taken place in 1942.
Taking into consideration the high demand for Ceylon Tea, and wanting to position ‘KingsBru’ brand in its rightful place, the management ofKingsBru Teas courageously upgraded it to the present elegance with state of the art facilities. This resulted in quality manufacturing process with a capacity of producing 1.2 Mn/Kgs of black tea per annum.
You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.
C. S. Lewis
